Do US military families need to register (Anmeldung) in Germany?
Quick answer
Members of the force, the civilian component and their dependents covered by Article 6 of the NATO SOFA Supplementary Agreement are exempt from German residence-registration rules, except hotel registration. Confirm that your own status falls within those categories before following ordinary Anmeldung instructions.

A U.S. passport, job title or off-base address does not by itself establish treaty coverage. Contractors and households with mixed status should ask their servicing legal office which rules apply.

Before completing a municipal registration form, ask your housing or legal office which document to provide. Keep the request and the office’s response.
