SOFA status: know your documents and limits
Confirm your status with the installation office before relying on an exemption. Different family, employment and residence situations can change which rules apply.

Check who and what your status covers
The U.S. Army’s SOFA overview explains that the agreements address forces, accompanying civilians, certain contractors and dependents. Do not infer your own eligibility from a job title alone. Ask the installation passport, personnel or legal office which documents establish your status and whether each family member needs separate documentation.
Keep exemptions separate from ordinary responsibilities
SOFA status is not diplomatic immunity: German law still applies. The Army’s overview also warns that privileges do not automatically carry into another country. Ask the responsible office about driving, purchases and travel rather than treating status as a blanket exemption.
Get advice before your situation changes
A job change, sponsor departure, family change or plan to remain in Germany can raise different status questions. Before continuing to rely on a privilege, ask the responsible office what changes and when. For tax, employment or residence questions, describe your full circumstances rather than assuming all income or activities are exempt.
