US to German license: check which process applies
A German civilian license and a U.S. Forces license are different routes. Start with your status and future plans, then ask the responsible licensing office what applies.

Choose the right licensing route
Ramstein’s official motor-vehicle guidance says assigned personnel need a U.S. Forces license to drive in Germany. If you will remain as an ordinary civilian resident, ask the German Fahrerlaubnisbehörde about the German license process. Do not treat a civilian license-exchange table as approval for your military-status driving.
Check your state and license class
Germany’s FeV Anlage 11 lists exchange provisions by issuing country or U.S. state and license class. Read the exact row for your license with the German licensing authority. Avoid assuming that a friend’s exchange experience applies to a different state or category.
Plan any change of status early
If your assignment or status is ending, ask both the installation licensing office and German authority what you need before continuing to drive. Ask your U.S. state licensing agency about renewal from overseas; renewal rules are state-specific.
